Editorial Review:

Amazon.com essential video:
Vincente Minnelli's 1958 adaptation of Colette's story about a girl (Leslie Caron) groomed as a courtesan--but desired as a wife by a Parisian playboy (Louis Jordan)--won a lot of Oscars, but it also has the unusual distinction of being an MGM musical shot on location in the City of Lights. What a musical it is (by Lerner and Loewe): Maurice Chevalier and Hermione Gingold crooning "Ah, Yes, I Remember It Well," plus the songs "Thank Heaven for Little Girls," "Gigi," "I'm a Bore," and "She's Not Thinking of Me." Director Vincente Minnelli (Some Came Running, Meet Me in St. Louis) makes a sumptuous, dreamy, almost laid-back affair of it all, and the indispensable cast is forever etched into memory. Hollywood's long-running infatuation with continental grace and manners, the memory of a much earlier time imported to American movies through such immigrant directors as Ernst Lubitsch, may have finally come to a gentle end with this film. --Tom Keogh

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Minelli's Masterpiece: Gigi (2-Disc Spec. Ed.)
Gigi has always been my favorite musical and this 2-Disc edition brings it vibrantly to life. Every time I see this film, I marvel at Leslie Caron's performance: With only two films to her credit before this, she is absolutely delightful as Gigi and, as the commentator notes, it was crucial that the role be played by an actress who could carry off the gauche, impetuous schoolgirl as well as the glamorous, elegant woman that she becomes. Caron does both beautifully and imbues her with a delightful ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Gigi Two disc special edition
I love this ... and I'm not finished watching it. The subtitles of French version of Gigi many times couldn't be read because they're white on white. It would have been nice if someone would have thought of this and put them on a black background. All in all, well worth the purchase. Watching the commentary on the movie is a must.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - So... Blu-ray release in the future??
Actually, this is a comment towards Warner Video.. I am in Japan right now, and just bought the Blu-ray GIGI, with all the same trimmings in this version as well. From what I read in the other review about this version, it is supposed to be released in Blu-ray in the U.S. sometime in 2009. WHY DO THEY DO THIS?? Why is it not announced??? So that we have to buy both versions?? Like myself who pre-ordered the U.S. regular version some months back, only to find out that Japan has released the same title ... Read More

BACK IN THE DAY! WHEN SOMETHINGS WERE LEFT TO ONES IMAGINATION THIS WAS A WONDERFUL ROMANTIC MOVIE. MUSIC, COSTUMES, EVERYTHING IS A DELIGHT AND ONE CAN ENJOY THIS MOVIE WITH THE WHOLE FAMILY.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Gigi Movie Review from The Massie Twins
Gigi wishes for something more than just riches as she's transformed into a proper lady to appeal to extremely wealthy sugar king Gaston. And although this lush musical boasts about love, it defines marriage to be superior to undying romance. Aside from Maurice Chevalier's enchanting song "I Remember It Well," Gigi is only delightful most of the time, occasionally losing steam during musical sequences that fail to spark prominent emotions. The story is estimable but not unparalleled, and with chiefly forgettable ... Read More
