Twelve years after Die Hard with a Vengeance, the third and previous film in the Die Hard franchise, Live Free or Die Hard finds John McClane (Bruce Willis) a few years older, not any happier, and just as kick-ass as ever. Right after he has a fight with his college-age daughter (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), a call comes in to pick up a hacker (Justin Long, a.k.a. the "Apple guy") who might help the FBI learn something about a brief security blip in their systems. Now any Die Hard fan knows that this is when the assassins with foreign accents and high-powered weaponry show up, telling McClane that once again he's stumbled into an assignment that's anything but routine. Once that wreckage has cleared, it is revealed that the hacker is only one of many hackers who are being targeted for extermination after they helped set up a "fire sale," a three-pronged cyberattack designed to bring down the entire country by crippling its transportation, finances, and utilities. That plan is now being put into action by a mysterious team (Timothy Olyphant, Deadwood, and Maggie Q, Mission: Impossible 3) that seems to be operating under the government's noses.

Live Free or Die Hard uses some of the cat-and-mouse elements of Die Hard with a Vengeance along with some of the pick-'em-off-one-by-one elements of the now-classic original movie. And it's the most consistently enjoyable installment of the franchise since the original, with eye-popping stunts (directed by Len Wiseman of the Underworld franchise), good humor, and Willis's ability to toss off a quip while barely alive. There was some controversy over the film's PG-13 rating--there might be less blood than usual, and McClane's famous tag line is somewhat obscured--but there's still has plenty of action and a high body count. Yippee-ki-ay! --David Horiuchi

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - over the top
so much happens in this movie that its hard to stomach. if you do not have a good sound system or a half way decent televison you might be missing out. the stuff that happens to the main character of course would kill you or I but its a movie and its supposed to be high action so just sit back and enjoy it.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Great story, good dialogue, but some overdone action scenes
In the sequel-dominated decade that is Hollywood since 1999's release of The Phantom Menace, it was only a matter of time before Bruce Willis put in another Die Hard flick. This time the bad guys are a collection of international criminals led by an ex-fed genius. The good guys are led by John McClane of the NYPD, his whiz-kid sidekick, and various feds. Like previous die-hard movies, we have lots of shooting, a gorgeous bad babe, some fistfights, and of course several helicopters, instead of ... Read More

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - It's alright if you like these kind of movies.
Live Free or Die Hard starring Bruce Willis is the 4th installment in the Die Hard franchise. The last film was 15 years ago and John is still a tough as nails cop. Justin Long is pretty good as well, nice comic relief, always liked him on the t.v. show Ed. The stunts are pretty outrageous (that's a good thing), and the plot is intense, great music as well. I am not a huge fan of action flicks but this one is pretty entertaining, Die Hard 2 is the best in the series but Live Free or Die Hard shall ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Only buy if you like GREAT action movies!
One of the things that made/make the Die Hard series so great is that they are GREAT action movies...and this one is an excellent example! I love it when McClane tells the bad guy that his girlfriend is down the elevator shaft with an SUV up her ... It is pure Die Hard dialog! This is a keeper and I am glad I bought the unrated version on DVD so that I could have the famous Yippee Ki Yay line that we all know and love so well. But I must say one of my favorite lines in this movie is when Justin Long ... Read More

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Please Die Hard and Stay Dead
I was mildly entertained with this movie until it got to the part where the bad guy authorized a US Fighter Pilot to engage an attack on a Semi driven by our real American Hero, John McClane, on a busy Mix Master Highway. "Must kill that terrorist", RIGHT. So the Fighter Pilot is shooting missile after missile at Poor ole' John collapsing overpass after overpass killing hundreds of motorists. "Must kill that terrorist at all cost". That's still not enough. He pelts it with bullets, destroying even more ... Read More
